welcome to kythnos

The small island of Kythnos is surprisingly off the beaten track, despite being just a short ferry ride away from Athens. Off course, that makes it even more special, as it’s pristine beaches and traditional villages aren’t crowded by tourists.

With its whitewashed houses adorned by Bougainvillea, bear landscape and sweaping sea views across it’s hills, this beautiful island is a typical Cycladic destination. It’s a great destination for relaxation, exploring and days where time doesn’t matter.

WHERE TO SWIM?

Rent a car to explore as many of the 90 beaches as your heart desires - many of which are secluded.

Don’t miss Kolona beach - famous for it’s uniquely shaped double bay with sea on both sides. Go early in the morning to enjoy it before the yachts and day-trip boats arrive (as this is the most popular beach on the island).

If you prefer quieter beaches, head to Skylou or Gaidouromandra - accessible through a short walk path.

WHERE TO EAT?

For lunch, head to Ag. Dimitrios and try the island’s best meatballs, or its homegrown organic chicken and lamb. Another great choice is the very unassuming little taverna on Flambourias beach, with traditional Greek dishes like gemista and pastitsio as well as Archipelagos in Kanala.

In the evening, explore Kythnos old town and stop at Tratamento for traditional desserts made daily and their famous almond paste cookies. For dinner go to Psipsina for alternative greek cuisine or the traditional taverna Steki tou Ntezi.

Don’t miss a trip to sleepy Driopida village, where you can dine at Chartino Karavi and stroll around the cobblestone backstreets.

For amazing fish, the more upscale Arias restaurant in Ag. Eirini is an excellent choice. The nearby village of Loutra has a good diving school and natural hot water springs.
