Sustainable Islands

Greek islands, formerly isolated from the national grid are now slowly but steadily being linked underwater to the mainland!

This project allows for the creation of a transcribe grid, which will provide island businesses with the opportunity to use cheaper electricity but also produce and sell their own renewable energy produced locally!

A trip to Tinos

A trip to Tinos

When we booked a five day trip to Tinos, we didn’t know what to expect. You see, Tinos is thought to be the holy island of Virgin Mary, with one of the most important orthodox churches in Greece, Panagia Megalochari (the Blessed Virgin Mary) and we weren’t going there on a pilgrimage. We were both curious to discover what was putting Tinos on the map and keen to visit before it became flooded with tourists. As predictable as it may sound, we were blown away by this island, offering so much more than we expected. Tinos is a typical Cyclades Island, with the traditional white washed houses, tiny churches with ocean blue domes and bougainvilleas hanging over balconies overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The barren landscape with scattered bushes of thyme, oregano and other herbs invites you to daydream and accentuates the beauty of the sea stretching in the distance.

Beaches and culture: Tinos has gorgeous beaches, to suit every taste. Whether you like small secluded bays, pebbled beaches with caves awaiting to be discovered, long sandy beaches - family friendly or cosmopolitan ones, you will not be disappointed.

Tinos’s tiny villages, dotted along the island, drew us in each for its own charms. Volax, with its beautifully shaped granite boulders, calling you to climb them and the narrow cobbled streets, Panormos, the traditional fishing village with the Museum of Marble Crafts that brings to life the art of marble carving and its picturesque natural port and Kambos with the Tsoclis Museum, showcasing the art of the brilliant greek painter where some of our favorites.

Sports and activities: Untouched beaches and lovely villages and are not the only reasons to fall in love with Tinos. The island is a destination for sports lovers. Catch great waves on Megali Kolymbithra beach or sit back and enjoy while surf-watching. If rock climbing is your thing, you won’t be disappointed, with routes for every level on Exomvourgo and bouldering in Volax. Countless hiking trails and stone-paved paths exceeding 400 km cover the whole island and are a great way to discover the unspoiled nature of Tinos. Another highlight off course is the quality of the waters which are clean and crystal clear and are ready for swimmers, paddlers and instagramers alike to enjoy. Don’t forget your fins and mask if you wish to discover what lies beneath the sun kissed water surface and discover octopuses, squids, sea urchins and more.

Food and wine: Off course, Tinos proudly lives up to the expectations of the most demanding foodie with simple tavernas, traditional ‘kafenia’ (cafes) and more upscale restaurants offering local delicacies and all the traditional greek recipes you may have already sampled. Don’t forget to try some of the locally produced myzithra cheese, mouthwatering meat products (such as sausages, sissera or syglina, and louzes),delicious artichokes and the sweet lychnarakia.

How to get there: Tinos is easily accessible by boat from Athens or the nearby islands (e.g. Andros and Mykonos). Take the fast ferry from Rafina port in Athens and reach Tinos in just 2 hours or board any of the bigger ferries from Piraeus or Rafina.

Island hopping: you can easily combine your trip to Tinos with other nearby destinations such as the cosmopolitan party island of Mykonos or the off the beaten track Andros.

The Acropolis

Greece is a country where you can see everything at once. From monuments that are a thousand years old to majestic landscapes of two thousand islands, where only 300 of them are currently inhabited.

It does not matter where you're going. It's who you have beside you.

It does not matter where you're going. It's who you have beside you.

Traveling to the greek islands is an absolute treat for the senses, from the stunning visuals of Cyclades architecture, with buildings painted in white and blue to symbolize the Aegean Sea and Greek sky.

Looking back in time.

More importantly, what truly makes Greece so unique is the warmth of the people. Greeks have a splendid sense of hospitality, and they are always excited and willing to show you everything that their enchanting country has to offer.
